morley station carpark
Haylee won the tender to create the artwork for the Morley Station carpark as part of the METRONET project. She was selected because of the deep level of connection the concept had to Morley; referencing iconic Morley institutions and experiences from the past 40 years. The concept created continuities between the established (and historical) Morley on the one hand, and the new space of the train station and surrounds on the other.
The impressive final artwork consists of three main areas - a blade wall, perforated screens, and the level 1 balustrade wall. Together, they form a bold, modern statement enhancing the arrival and departure experience.
The blade wall prominently features the name "Morley" in colourful, overlapping letters, referencing the Morley Markets font. Abstract patterns are inspired by the suburb’s history, such as references to Boans department store and local architectural designs. Realistic black-and-white depictions of curry leaves, olives , dragon fruit and bananas offer a link to the adjacent perforated screens.
The perforated screen artwork wrapping the car park is a modern-retro look at Morley’s historical pathways and multicultural present. Edible plants feature, representing the impact that Morley’s multicultural residents have had on the local environment and culture.
The level 1 balustrade artwork highlights iconic aspects of old-school Morley, combining archival imagery with playful references to local culture. It begins with an image of Boans department store and moves through scenes representing local landmarks and experiences, such as the “Morley Seal” sculptures, the Wirrina Drive-in Theatre, and the Morley Rollerdrome. The artwork offers a further nod to the area's Italian and Asian communities, sharing a colourful snapshot of Morley’s rich cultural history - a true testament to the impact of art in capturing and celebrating the suburb’s local identity.
